Population status of the critically endangered tree Vatica venulosa (Dipterocarpaceae) in lowland riparian forests of East Kalimantan

Abstract Vatica venulosa is a threatened tree from the family Dipterocarpaceae. Due to degradation and conversion of its habitat in lowland riparian forests, this species classified as Critically Endangered by International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN) Red List. We carried out surveys V . Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, depict current population status region. surveyed 14 forested areas along Belayan River Kartanegara. From these locations, we only successfully identified at one location, namely Long Beleh Village, Kembang Janggut District. A total 71 individuals which 84.5% 0-5 cm diameter class, were found. also found nine mature stage, i.e., producing flowers fruits. The main threat into large-scale oil palm plantations. Protection forest fragment highly recommended order protect local extinction.
